Joaquín Almunia, vice president of the European Commission and European Commissioner for Competition, delivered the speech "Bank Resolution and EU Competition Regime: On the Road to the Banking Union in Europe" at the Peterson Institute on September 25, 2013. He discussed the latest developments in the creation of a Single Resolution Mechanism for failing banks and other related topics.

Prior to joining the European Commission, Almunia was the founding director of the progressive think tank Laboratorio de Alternativas. He has also held many prominent public offices in Spain, including leader of the Spanish political party PSOE and Minister of Public Administration and Minister of Employment and Social Security.
