The Institute released a comprehensive new analysis entitled "Europe on the Brink" by Senior Fellow Simon Johnson and Nonresident Visiting Fellow Peter Boone. The authors analyze the moral hazard financial system that Europe has created and outline three possible scenarios for what might happen in coming months as the crisis deepens. Following the authors' presentations, Research Fellow and Europe expert Jacob Funk Kirkegaard made brief comments.

Simon Johnson has been a senior fellow at the Institute since September 2008, prior to which he was economic counsellor and director of the research department at the International Monetary Fund. He is simultaneously professor of entrepreneurship at MIT's Sloan School of Management, a member of the FDIC's Systemic Resolution Advisory Committee and a member of the CBO's Panel of Economic Advisers. His recent book 13 Bankers reached number 5 on the New York Times bestseller list after its release in April 2010. Peter Boone is a principal at Salute Capital Management U.K., nonresident senior fellow at the Institute, visiting senior Fellow at the London School of Economics, and chairman of Effective Intervention.
