Summary

In collaboration with the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation, the US National Center for APEC, and the Australian National University, the Institute hosted the conference "Seizing the Moment: APEC 2010 and 2011" on April 16, 2010. Former Vice President Walter Mondale and C. Fred Bergsten delivered keynote speeches, followed by two panel discussions involving key US, Japanese, and Australian government officials as well as experts on APEC.
With Japan and the United States hosting the APEC summits in 2010 and 2011 respectively, the conference aimed to provide an opportunity to hold frank talks and work closely to define an agenda that reflects a common vision for promoting continued rapid economic growth in the Asia-Pacific region. Conference participants also discussed opportunities for APEC to contribute in areas beyond trade such as climate change, counterterrorism, emergency preparedness, and sustainable development.
