April 24, 2009
Pascal Lamy, director-general of the World Trade Organization, addressed the central issues now facing the WTO at an Institute event April 24, 2009. Lamy discussed the organization's role in implementing the "name-and-shame" initiative of the G-20 summits to halt the worldwide protectionist slide, the revival of the Doha Round, and the long-term agenda of the WTO.
Pascal Lamy became director-general of WTO in 2005 and is currently running unopposed for a second term. He was previously the member of the European Commission in charge of trade policy, from 1999 until 2004, at which time he worked closely with then US Trade Representative Robert Zoellick in launching and pursuing the early stages of Doha.
