From Here to Eternity: The Outlook for Fiscal Adjustment in Advanced Economies

Carlo Cottarelli, International Monetary Fund

Peterson Institute for International Economics, Washington, DC

May 20, 2013

Carlo Cottarelli, director of the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) Fiscal Affairs Department, addressed the topic "From Here to Eternity: The Outlook for Fiscal Adjustment in Advanced Economies," on May 20, 2013. His remarks built on the work behind the April 2013 issue of the IMF Fiscal Monitor, which surveys and analyzes the latest public finance developments and assesses policies to put public finances on a sustainable footing.

Cottarelli has been director of the Fund's Fiscal Affairs Department since November 2008.  He has written several papers on fiscal and monetary policies and institutions and edited books on inflation, monetary policy, and exchange rates.  He joined the IMF in 1988, working for the European Department, the Monetary and Capital Markets Department, the Policy Development and Review Department, and ultimately the Fiscal Affairs Department.  Cottarelli previously worked in the Research Department of the Bank of Italy in the Monetary and Financial Sector Division. He received degrees in economics from the University of Siena and the London School of Economics.
