The Challenges and Opportunities of International Trade: Past, Present, and Future

Sander M. Levin, United States House of Representatives

Peterson Institute for International Economics, Washington, DC

July 23, 2013

Representative Sander M. Levin discussed the US trade agenda at the Peterson Institute on July 23, 2013. He addressed fast track legislation (trade promotion authority); the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations, including Japan's imminent participation; the new negotiations to establish a free trade agreement with the European Union (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership); a Trade in Services agreement; and other topics.

Representative Levin has represented the 9th district in Michigan since 1983. He is the Ranking Member of the House Ways and Means Committee, which has jurisdiction over all tax and trade policies and entitlement spending. He has served on four of the six Ways and Means Subcommittee (Trade, as well as Social Security, Health Care, Income Security and Family Support). He has been a strong supporter of US trade remedy laws meant to respond to the unfair trade practices of other countries and has worked to improve numerous trade agreements and oppose others that did not meet his aspirations for shaping globalization to advantage US workers and businesses.
