European Monetary Union: Roads to Survival

Mark Cliffe, ING Group

Peterson Institute for International Economics, Washington, DC

November 13, 2012

Mark Cliffe, chief economist of the ING Group based in Amsterdam, spoke at the Peterson Institute on November 13, 2012 on the topic of how a breakup of the euro area can be avoided. Cliffe and his ING team have attracted considerable attention for having described the nature and possible consequences of a breakup of the euro area. They have devised a strategy to avoid such an outcome built on a three-part platform of reform, reflation, and redistribution—all of which raise major political problems both within and among the member countries.

Cliffe was previously chief international economist at HSBC, Nomura Research Institute, and ANZ Merchant Bank. He appears frequently in the international media, including on television channels such as CNBC and Bloomberg.
