Promises to Keep: The Policy Actions Needed to Secure Global Recovery

Christine Lagarde, Managing Director, International Monetary Fund

Peterson Institute for International Economics, Washington, DC

September 24, 2012

IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde discussed the state of the world economy and the policy actions needed to secure global recovery. Her speech at the Peterson Institute came just days before the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank scheduled in early October in Tokyo. C. Fred Bergsten led the discussion session following Lagarde's speech.

Christine Lagarde became managing director of the International Monetary Fund in July 2011 and has played a central role since that time in the international efforts to maintain financial stability and restore global growth. She was previously minister of finance in her native France, starting in 2007, the first woman to hold such a post in a G-7 country. The Financial Times named her European Finance Minister of 2009 and, when France chaired the G-20 in 2011, she launched a wide-ranging work agenda on reform of the international monetary system.
