The Institute and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) jointly hosted a day-long conference, "The China Balance Sheet in 2007 and Beyond," on May 2, 2007. The event featured keynote presentations by Secretary of the Treasury Henry Paulson, former Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick, and Microsoft Chief Research and Strategy Officer Craig Mundie. It included eight new papers on central aspects of China’s role in the world economy and relationships between China and the United States, including their economic and political dimensions.

The conference is part of the China Balance Sheet project, a program jointly conducted by the Institute and CSIS. The initial year of the project produced the book China, The Balance Sheet: What the World Needs to Know Now About the Emerging Superpower. The papers presented at this conference represent the results of the second year of the China Balance Sheet project.
