Karel De Gucht, European Commissioner for Trade, discussed the trade policy of the European Union at an event at the Peterson Institute on December 16, 2010. Commissioner De Gucht detailed the EU's new trade strategy, including prospects for the Doha Round, the EU's agenda for bilateral and regional trade pacts, and how the United States and Europe can work together to advance international trade reforms.

Karel De Gucht has been European Commissioner for Trade since February 2010. Previously, he served as European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid. A native of Belgium, he has held several high level posts in his national government, including Deputy Prime Minister (2008–09), Minister for Foreign Affairs and European Affairs (2004–09), and Minister for International Trade (2007–09). For almost two decades, he has also been a professor in European law at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, where he received his law degree in 1976.
